bear necessi"teas"
This is the bear figurine which was influenced by the picture from the previous post. The nose has been the most difficult part so far. Upon adding the legs I found it difficult to get them in just the right angle and shape to appear more naturalistic. I find this to be my favorite piece that I have made so far as I am very happy with how its shape turned out. I kept trying to make this piece extremely realistic yet gave in to adding some whimsy to the piece through his expression and the teacup in his hand. The piece I was influenced from portrayed a bear holding berries, but I preferred to add some whimsy to this overall realistic piece. The claws hardened and broke off continuously so I had to reapply claws multiple times. I am extremely happy with the dimension present in this piece; it is larger and fuller than my previous fox figurine and I added and removed clay from its arms and stomach repeatedly to see how it would look either way. I wish to continue a small series of animals that appear seemingly realistic except for one aspect of the piece, such as this bear who happens to be holding a teacup. With future animal figurines I plan to create a setting for the figurines in their natural habitat. This piece and those that influence it have since inspired me to move forward with this style and push myself farther, Especially next year I plan to create larger and more detailed pieces. This piece in itself was a larger piece in width for me but not by height. For glazes I used the satin black glaze for the entirety of his fur which created an amazing matte yet slight glossy effect which I am very excited with. The glaze for his nose and around his eyes the tan gloss glaze which came out lighter that I expected. I would have preferred a darker more natural brown as an accent to his dark fur. The teacup was matte cotton white glaze, the tongue raspberry gloss glaze, and the eyes fudge brown gloss glaze. Overall I consider this to be my best piece so far.

These are several photos from the Southwest Art magazine in class that I will be using for inspiration for future pieces. I am currently working on the bear figurine. I love the realism of these animal figurines and wish to focus on creating realistic animal figurines such as these. I have been using various tools to creat texture on the bear figurine so far.
